Vacationing in Mid-Coast Maine is always a summer highlight, whether you are staying for a week or a full month. We’ve put together a Maine Road trip itinerary that highlights must-stop locations and fun events to attend. If you are traveling from Boston to Maine, or another New England town, this itinerary is perfect as you drive north up the coast on Route 1 to your Maine vacation rental!
Nubble Lighthouse
Take the time to stop at the Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Also known as the Cape Neddick Light, this is one of the most southern lighthouses in the state. The lighthouse is located just offshore on the Cape Neddick Nubble, a small, rocky island. While there are no visitors allowed in the lighthouse, the views from the shore are stunning and offer a quintessential Maine lighthouse experience.
The Golden Rod
After visiting the lighthouse, stop by the Golden Rod in the nearby town of Cape Neddick. This classic candy counter and diner is famous for its Salt Water taffy that is made onsite. Guests love to watch as they “pull” the taffy the old fashioned way. The Golden Rod also serves ice cream and other New England fare. After grabbing some taffy or other sweet treats, take a quick walk to Short Sands Beach and Ellis Park, located right next door.
Waterfront Seafood in Wells
Next, travel up Route 1 and stop in the small town of Wells for lunch at one of the many waterfront seafood restaurants. Make sure to get a window seat so you can take in the view of the ocean, lobster boats, and seagulls. Some of our favorites include Hobbs Harborside and Fishermans’ Catch, both located along Harbor Road.
Walker’s Point Estate
As you continue to drive north, make a stop in Kennebunkport and drive by the Bush summer home. Also known as Walker’s Point Estate, this home served as the summer retreat of two United States presidents while they were in office. The estate has a lot of history behind it, and has been in the Bush family for over 100 years! Take in the stunning views of the rocky and serene Maine coast before driving further north toward Portland.
The Original LL Bean Store
After passing the bustling city of Portland, you’ll drive through the town of Freeport, which is home to the original LL Bean store. First opened in 1917, the LL Bean store is open 24/7 365 days a year and has over 200,000 square feet of retail space. Make sure to stop by and say “hello” to the famous Bean Boot and browse the store for great deals.
Maine State Music Theatre
From Freeport, you will pass through Brunswick, which is where the Maine State Music Theatre is located. This theatre offers season tickets that we highly recommend for guests who are staying in Boothbay for a month or longer. Brunswick and the next-door town of Bath are home to many wonderful restaurants. One of our personal favorites is Mae’s, which has great food and a fabulous bakery.
Boothbay Harbor
Not long after passing through the small town of Bath, you turn off Route 1 onto Route 27. This is when you know you’re getting close to Boothbay Harbor! There is something special about the trip down Route 27. You can feel the cares drift away and a sense of well-being taking over.
